Denis Ichitovkin

Born in Perm in 1977 and now based in St. Petersburg, Denis Ichitovkin is a Russian painter whose interiors turn ordinary rooms into charged, attentive spaces.

LOOKING AT THE WORK

Realism with a contemporary quiet.

Ichitovkin trained at the Repin Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, in the mural painting class of Andrey Mylnikov. That academic foundation is visible in the control of proportion, light and surface, but the paintings do not feel historical or decorative.

They are built from city apartments and everyday rooms: kitchens, corridors, windows, chairs, tables, a conversation half overheard, a figure at the edge of the frame. His realism is precise without being cold. The rooms feel lived in, but never over-explained.

In his own artist statement, Ichitovkin has described an interest in figurative painting, traditional effects of light and texture, and real situations rather than idealised scenes. That directness is part of what gives the work its presence.

CONTEXT

Rooms that hold more than they show.

His work has been featured by the State Russian Museum, yet the subject matter stays intimate. The paintings often withhold the event itself: a chair, a doorway, a patch of tile or a darkened window carries the emotional weight.

That restraint is what makes the images linger. They do not announce themselves all at once. They ask for a slower kind of looking, where small shifts in colour, light and composition begin to feel like the real subject of the room.

As prints, the works keep that quiet pressure. They can sit naturally in a domestic space while still pulling attention back to their surfaces, details and atmosphere.
